Part word game, part quiz, Initial Knowledge is played by 2 to 4 players (or teams) who start by selecting the categories they will use.
There are some "standard" categories, e.g.:
but you can easily add (or substitute) your own categories. Each player (or team) writes down the categories on a piece of paper.
- Boys' names
- Fruits and vegetables
- Girls' names
- Seas, lakes and rivers
- TV shows
Next, some random letter is chosen --you could pick a letter from a book or newspaper, for example, or ask an adult.
As soon as the letter has been selected, it is announced to the players and the game starts.
The objective of the game is to find a word in each category that starts with the chosen letter. Let's say the letter "B" had been selected; in that case, you could come up with Bear, Bill, Blouse, Belgium, ... and so on! The players write down their words next to each category.
As soon as a player has found a word for all categories, he or she says: "Done!" and the other players must stop writing. The game can also end automatically (say: five minutes after it has started), if a "difficult" letter has been selected and nobody is able to use it in every category.
The player with the most correct answers wins the round; the first player (or team) to win five rounds, wins the game.
